The History of M.A.R.E
M.A.R.E. was launched in 2019 as a student-led initiative at the Universität Hamburg, with the goal of organizing a conference dedicated to early career researchers in maritime archaeology. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to adapt and host the event virtually. Despite the challenges, the conference was a great success, inspiring Maurice Thurn and Alexander C. Reich to evolve M.A.R.E. into an ongoing online lecture series.
Since then, our lecture series has been well received, providing a platform for emerging scholars to present their research to an engaged international audience.
In 2023, we welcomed Judith Gatt to our team and introduced a monthly newsletter, delivering updates on job opportunities, recent publications, and upcoming conferences and lectures to our growing community.
Looking ahead to 2025, we are excited to expand our team with three new members: Georgios Apeitos, Juan del Caño Cobo, and Colan L. MacKenzie. With their support, we are now launching the M.A.R.E. Podcast, further enhancing our range of initiatives for the maritime archaeology community.
If you are interested in presenting your own project via this online lecture series please write an E-Mail to mare.conference@gmail.com with your CV and a short abstract about your project.
