Koan Painted Medium-Coarse Pottery and the “SASCAR String”: Towards a Navigation Model for the Aegean Late Bronze Age

Abstract:

Over the last two decades, connectivity and cultural interaction in the early Late Bronze Age Minoanized Aegean has been extensively studied through the frameworks of human mobility and/or network theory. This research – conducted within SELAP (Serraglio, Eleona, and Langada Archaeological Project), a project directed by S. Vitale on the island of Kos – explores a different approach, based on the combined analysis of two factors: the wide distribution of a distinctive ceramic class and our current understanding of ancient navigation. Specifically, the case study presented investigates details of sailing, directionality, duration, and seasonality, through which Koan Painted Medium-Coarse to Coarse pottery was distributed in the southeast Aegean-south west coastal Anatolian region.
